Wildlife Sanctuaries of Mizoram
Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary
Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary is situated amidst dense forests. Located about 125 kilometers from Aizawl, they are rich in biodiversity, attracting tourists and nature lovers from everywhere. The name ‘Dampa’ is said to be derived from the lonely bachelors (‘Dam Pa’ means single men) who have survived in the region, with most of the female population having died out.

Khawnglung Wildlife Sanctuary
The natural and enchanting natural beauty of this sanctuary has been a great delight for nature lovers. It has been described as one of the best places to visit in Lunglei district. Tourists consider it an ideal place to commune with nature. With lush habitat of subtropical semi-evergreen forests, bamboo is the most common species of flora found in the region. There is also abundance of tigers and leopards in the sanctuary. binturongs, and slow loris among others. A significant avifauna population is also found in the area with notable species such as the wreathed hornbill and Mrs. Hume’s pheasant.

Lengteng Wildlife Sanctuary
The sanctuary is only a few kilometers away from the India-Burma border and is located close to the Murlen National Park. It is said to be alive with a large variety of birds. Notable biodiversity in the sanctuary includes tiger, leopard, Himalayan black bear, ferret badger, large Indian civet, etc. The rich evergreen and semi-evergreen forests are also rich in immense floral diversity. Nature lovers can visit the sanctuary between the months of October and April, which is considered the best time for the purpose.

Ngengpui Wildlife Sanctuary
This sanctuary is located close to the India-Myanmar and India-Bangladesh borders. The altitude ranges from 200 meters to 1200 meters above sea level. The sanctuary is named after the river that flows through the valley in which it is located. There is a lush green network of dense forests in this area. This habitat provides home to mammals like elephant, tiger, leopard, clouded leopard, jungle cat, Malayan sun bear etc. An abundant avifauna population is endemic to this area. Bamboo is a major component of the native vegetation of this region.

Pualreng Wildlife Sanctuary is located in northern Mizoram. The altitude is up to 750 meters. Its climate is mild. The tropical forest area is rich in extensive biodiversity of endemic flora and fauna.

Tawi is one of the first sanctuaries to be created in Mizoram. Located at a distance of about a hundred kilometers from Aizwal, it is home to a large biodiversity of rare fauna and flora. The forests are largely unexplored, and the geographical assets of the sanctuary include sparkling streams, steep slopes and salt lakes which add to its natural splendor.

Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary
Another sanctuary in Mizoram, established in the year 2001, Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary is a picturesque landscape with breathtaking views of lush green forests. The tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests of the sanctuary serve as a green passage for the movement of elephants that migrate here from Bangladesh and back. Rich in vast flora and fauna, the mammalian biodiversity here includes gaur, sambar, tiger and leopard. Birds like Khaleej pheasant and red jungle fowl can also be seen in this area.

Mizoram’s largest lake, Palak Lake, is located in the Toklo Wildlife Sanctuary. The lake is surrounded by dense forest. According to one description, the mist that hangs over the lake in the morning gives the place the feel of a magical land from a fairy tale.
