Various breeds of camel exist in India which are used for carrying weight and milking purposes:

Bikaneri Camel

The Bikaneri breed of camel is one of the major breeds found in India. The breed takes its name from the city of Bikaner, which was founded by Rao Bika in the 15th century and is known for its superior bearing capacity.

Housing and distribution

Bikaneri camels are mainly reared in Bikaner and its surrounding districts, such as Sriganganagar, Hanumangarh, Churu, Jhunjhunu, Sikar and Nagaur in Rajasthan and adjoining parts of Haryana and Punjab state. The home range of this breed is dry and sandy with extreme hot and cold climates.

Properties

Bikaneri breed of camels are heavy built and attractive to look at. It has good conformation, strong structure and active habits. Coat color varies from brown to black, although red is also found in some animals. Their body is symmetrical and head is slightly dome shaped. There is a prominent depression (ruck) on the forehead above the eyes, which is characteristic of the breed. The nose is long and extends up to two-thirds of the head. Some camels of this breed have abundant hair growing on their eyebrows, eyelashes and ears, these are called ‘Zipra’.

The chest pad is well developed and placed between the angles of the elbows. The shoulders are strong, broad and close to the chest. The neck is thick, well sprung, with a marked bend giving a graceful carriage to the head. The udder is well developed in females.

Jaisalmeri Camel

Habitat and Distribution

The breeding area of this breed includes Jaisalmer, Barmer and some parts of Jodhpur district in Rajasthan. Sand dunes are the distinctive features of this path.

Properties

Jaisalmeri camels are of active nature and are quite tall with long and thin legs. Their head and mouth are narrow and snout is short. The head is well placed on a slender neck and the eyes are prominent. The forehead is not dome-shaped and there is no depression above the eyes. Furthermore, they also do not have spectacular hair growth on their eyebrows, eyelashes and ears. The body color is mainly light brown. Jaisalmeri camels have thin skin and short body hair. The udder is mostly round in shape. It is a medium sized breed.

Kutchi Camel

Habitat and Distribution

The Kutchi breed resides in the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat. The major breeding tract includes the Kutch and Banskantha districts of Gujarat and the land is marshy and has considerable salt scrub.

Properties

Camels of this breed are usually brown to dark brown in color and do not have hair on the eyelids and ears. Body hair is thick. The head is of medium size without any distinctive “stop”. Body size is medium. Camels of this breed are heavy and sluggish in appearance. They are thick and slightly short. They have a strong hindquarters, heavy, hard and thick legs and are well adapted to the humid climate and marshy lands of Kutch. The udder is well developed and mostly round in shape.

Mewari Camel

The Mewari breed of camel takes its name from the Mewar region of Rajasthan and is famous for its milk production capacity.

Habitat and Distribution

The main breeding areas of this breed include Udaipur, Chittorgarh, Rajsamand districts and adjacent Neemuch and Mandsaur districts of Madhya Pradesh. Camels of this breed can also be seen in Bhilwara, Banswara, Dundarpur districts and Hadoti region of Rajasthan, which can be considered a small breeding area of this breed. The average altitude is about 575 meters above sea level. This path includes the Aravalli hills of the Mewar region.

Properties

Genetic improvement of indigenous camels through traditional and molecular means.
Mewari camels are thicker and slightly smaller than those of Bikaneri. They have a strong hindquarters, heavy legs, hard and thick foot pads. Well adapted for traveling over hills and carrying goods. The hair on the body is thick, which protects them from the bites of wild bees and insects.

Body color varies from light brown to dark brown but some camels are almost white in color, such variation in body color is not usually seen in other camel breeds. The head is heavy, resting on a thick neck. Unlike the Bikaneri camel, the Mewari camel has no ‘stop’ but has a loose snout. The ears are thick and small, well set apart, the tail is long and thick. In females the milk veins are prominent and the udder is well developed.

Double Humped Camel

A small population of Bactrian camel exists in the Nubra Valley of Ladakh (Jammu and Kashmir).

Properties

The humps are thick and flexible. At the end of winter when pastures are depleted, the humps collapse.
The skull bone is relatively shorter and broader than that of the dromedary camel.
The body of a camel is short and thick.
The color of the body varies from light brown to dark brown.
Long hair grows on the top of the head, lower part of the neck, hump and legs.
Adult body weight ranges from 450 to 550 kg. Male animals are heavier than females.

Jalori Camel

Geographic distribution and reproductive path

Jalori camel gets its name from the place of its rearing. The geographical distribution of the breed is mainly spread in Jalore and Sirohi districts of Rajasthan. The total population of Jalori camels in the breeding tract was estimated to be 7906 heads.

Breed Characteristics

Body colour: The main color of Jalori camels is brown. However, its color varies from light brown to dark brown.

Head Size:- The head of the Jalori camel is of medium size and fits well on a slender neck. Eyes are prominent. Unlike the Bikaneri camel, in the Jalori camel, the forehead is not dome-shaped and has no “stop”, which is the name given to a depression on the frontal bone at the upper edge where it meets the parietal bone. The supraorbital foramen, which is in the form of a deep cleft on the rostromedial margin of the orbit, is of normal depth compared to the Bikaner camel where it is deeper.

In the camels of Jalore district the snout is narrow and mostly pointed, but in the camels of Sirohi district it is round. The ears are held straight up and set well apart. The typical adaptive feature of the desert camel, “jhipra”, is absent in the Jalori camel. The lower lip is not inclined as seen in Kutchi camels.

Body and height:- This is a medium sized breed of camel. Jalori camels are of active nature. The neck and legs are thin. Body hair is coarse in quality and of medium length. The chest pad is well developed.

Characteristics of udder:- The milk vein is of small to medium size. The udder is mostly round in shape. In each udder quarter there is a small cone-shaped teat containing two ducts. Jalori breed is a multipurpose breed of camel and the animals of this breed are being used for milk production, tourism, riding and safari.

Malvi Camel

Malvi camel is a very specific breed of northern Madhya Pradesh (India), which has great potential for milk production. However the Malvi camel has long been recognized as a distinct population by local camel breeders.

Kharai Camel

Kutch’s unique breed of camels that can swim in seawater – known as Kharai due to its habitat and eating habits – has been identified as a separate camel by the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) based in Karnal, Haryana. Recognized as a breed. Kharai has now become the ninth breed of camel found in India.
